“Please let me know if there is anything that I can do to help you.”, he told her. “Anything at all!”, he repeated.
“Thank you!”, Alissa told him and bolted the door behind him.
Sharlee was sleepy, so Alissa gave her a bath and put her to bed. Alissa still hadn’t regained her full strength and energy. Just putting Sharlee to bed and getting settled in the room had worn her out.
She dressed for bed and then laid down beside Sharlee.
“Hello Dale, this is Alissa. I’m at the Arlington hotel.”, she told him.
“Alissa, I am so sorry that I hurt you! Please come home and let me explain!”, Dale pleaded.
“No, Dale. I don’t want to talk tonight. Maybe we need some time apart.”, she said.
“Alissa, please don’t do this. You haven’t completely recovered from your surgery, and you’re pregnant with our child. There is a lunatic that may still be after you. You have to come home!”, he told her.
The tears started flowing from her eyes. “From the time I was a child, I have looked after myself. It was a mistake to believe that I could depend on anyone else. It was a mistake to believe that someone could genuinely love me. I won’t make that mistake again! You broke my heart, Dale! “, she said as she hung up the phone.
Bryan hacked into the hospital computer files targeting the morgue entries for the date when he shot Alissa. There were no records of the dispensation of Alissa’s body on that date nor any following dates.
“She’s not dead! They tricked me!”, he realized furiously.
He contacted some of his sources, and it didn’t take him long to find out the location of the hospital to which Alissa had been secretly flown. He doubted that she was still there, but he was determined to find her. He had never lost a mark, and he wouldn’t lose this one either!
Dale sat in a chair in the kitchen. He felt totally depressed. He was on his third beer. “How could I have said those things to Alissa? How could I have even thought them?”, he asked himself.
He wouldn’t blame her if she never forgave him. He remembered the look in her eyes when he asked if Alex was the father. The pain in her voice, when she told him that he had broken her heart.
Really, the things he had accused her of were unforgivable. He had driven her away! He couldn’t imagine Alex ever speaking to her that way. Maybe she would be better off with him!
